About

Pomoxis nigromaculatus is the deeper-bodied, more boldly patterned of the two crappie species, its silver-green sides covered in a dense irregular mosaic of dark speckles and blotches rather than the vertical bars of the White Crappie. It prefers clearer, cooler, and more heavily vegetated water, and its coloration and pattern provide excellent camouflage among submerged aquatic plants.

In the aquarium, Black Crappie share many of the same requirements as their congener — they are schooling fish that need companions to feel secure, ample space for open-water swimming, and cool, well-oxygenated conditions. Their more striking pattern makes them a popular choice when both species are available.

Like White Crappie, they feed primarily on fish and invertebrates and may require patience when transitioning to prepared foods. Their need for cool water means summer chilling may be necessary in warmer climates, making them best suited to aquarists with appropriate temperature control equipment.

Care Guide

Water: 10–24 °C, pH 6.5–8.0, moderate hardness; clear water and good oxygenation preferred. Tank: 500 L minimum; planted edges with open central swimming space; strong filtration. Feeding: Live/frozen fish, invertebrates, worms; gradual training to quality sinking pellets. Breeding: Nest spawner in vegetation; not commonly achieved in home aquaria. Compatibility: School of 5+; semi-aggressive; do not mix with tiny species.
