Also known as: Black-finned Hap, Black-finned Copadichromis
Origin: Lake Malawi, Africa
The Black-finned Hap is a mid-sized Malawian haplochromine from the Copadichromis genus, found in open water above sandy and rocky transition zones. Males develop their characteristic black finnage at sexual maturity and are best displayed in large aquaria alongside similarly sized peacocks and haps. Females and juveniles are silver-brown.
Water: 24-27°C, pH 7.5-9.0, hard alkaline water; high water turnover recommended. Tank: Minimum 300L; open water column with a sandy substrate and minimal decor to allow free swimming. Feeding: Quality cichlid pellets, frozen krill, mysis, and brine shrimp; occasional vegetable supplement. Behaviour: Generally peaceful; males may spar with one another but rarely cause injury. Compatibility: Peacock and hap community; avoid small species that may be intimidated.
