Apteronotus albifrons
Also known as: Black Ghost Knife Fish, Black Ghost
Origin: South America
Apteronotus albifrons is a weakly electric nocturnal predator from the fast-flowing rivers of South America. Its striking jet-black body with white tail markings, combined with its hypnotic locomotive style, makes it an unforgettable display fish. It is intelligent, sensitive to poor water quality, and benefits from tube-shaped hiding spots exactly sized to its body.
Water: 24-28°C, pH 6.0-7.5, soft to moderately hard; very sensitive to nitrates — pristine water essential. Tank: Minimum 250L, dimly lit, PVC tubes sized to fit tightly, fine substrate. Feeding: Carnivore; live and frozen bloodworm, Tubifex, brine shrimp; nocturnal feeder. Behaviour: Peaceful with fish too large to eat; aggressive toward other knife fish. Compatibility: Large peaceful characins, medium cichlids, catfish; avoid other knife fish.
