Apteronotus albifrons
Also known as: Black Ghost Knifefish, Black Ghost
Origin: South America
Apteronotus albifrons is native to the Amazon and Orinoco basins, where it inhabits fast-flowing, well-oxygenated rivers with sandy substrates and submerged wood. It generates a weak electric field from its electric organ — a modified spinal nerve column — using it to navigate, detect prey, and communicate. Its all-black body with two white bands at the tail base and a white dorsal stripe makes it one of the most striking knifefish species. It propels itself via an undulating anal fin while keeping the body rigid. It is sensitive to poor water quality, requires pristine conditions, and needs hiding tubes or caves large enough to enter.
Water: 23-28°C, pH 6.0-7.5, soft to moderately hard; high oxygenation; very clean water essential. Tank: Minimum 300L; PVC tubes or hollow driftwood for hiding; low to moderate lighting; sand substrate. Feeding: Carnivore; live/frozen bloodworms, earthworms, blackworms, brine shrimp; night feeder. Breeding: Rarely achieved; lays eggs on flat surfaces; male guards clutch; specialist effort required. Compatibility: Peaceful with dissimilar fish; aggressive toward conspecifics and similar knifefish.
