Apteronotus albifrons
Origin: Amazon basin, South America
Apteronotus albifrons, the Black Ghost Knifefish, is a highly popular and charismatic South American knifefish. Its jet-black body with two white bands at the tail base creates a striking appearance. A weakly electric fish that navigates and communicates using electric fields. Nocturnal and initially shy; it becomes tame and recognises its keeper over time. Requires a suitably decorated tank with tall, dark hiding tubes. Sensitive to water quality. One of the most sought-after oddball freshwater fish.
Blackwater or soft, slightly acidic water. Temperature 23–28 °C. Provide tall PVC tubes or bamboo as hiding spaces. Feed frozen bloodworm, tubifex, and sinking pellets at night. Peaceful with fish too large to swallow. Sensitive to poor water quality and salt.
