Xiphophorus maculatus var.
Also known as: Black Hi-Fin Platy, Hi-Fin Black Platy
Origin: Captive bred
The Black Hi-Fin Platy carries the hi-fin mutation and is bred for maximum melanin expression, producing a velvety all-black fish with a commanding sail-like dorsal fin. The contrast between the dark body and the lighter aquarium background makes it stand out in any planted setup.
All-black fish can be challenging to photograph but look spectacular against light-coloured substrates or bright green plant backgrounds. The hi-fin dorsal makes the fish appear even larger than its actual size.
A robust and easy-to-care-for variety, this platy is suitable for all experience levels and breeds reliably with other platy variants.
Water: 20–26 °C, pH 7.0–8.0, GH 10–20; tolerant of varied conditions. Tank: 60 L minimum; light substrate and bright plants enhance the visual contrast of this dark fish. Feeding: Quality flake, spirulina, frozen Daphnia; 2 meals daily. Breeding: Prolific livebearer; hi-fin trait is dominant; most offspring will carry the hi-fin. Compatibility: Peaceful community fish; ideal with brightly coloured tank mates for contrast.
