Carassius auratus
Also known as: Black Moor, Black Telescope Goldfish, Dragon Eye Goldfish
Origin: China
The Black Moor is one of the most recognizable and widely kept fancy goldfish, appreciated for its deep velvety-black color and dramatic telescoping eyes. It is hardier than many other fancy varieties and a good choice for beginners interested in fancy goldfish. Its poor eyesight means it needs careful feeding and smooth tank décor.
Water: 10–22°C, pH 6.5–7.5, clean and well-oxygenated coldwater conditions. Tank: minimum 120 L, no sharp objects, smooth substrate to protect the eyes. Feeding: sinking pellets and frozen foods placed near the fish as vision is limited. Behaviour: peaceful and slow; may lose black coloration to orange in warmer water. Compatibility: ideal with other telescope-eye or fancy goldfish; avoid fast feeders.
