Hyphessobrycon herbertaxelrodi
Also known as: Black Neon Tetra
Origin: Brazil (Mato Grosso, Taquari River)
The Black Neon Tetra (Hyphessobrycon herbertaxelrodi) originates from the Taquari River system in the Brazilian Mato Grosso and is a staple of the planted aquarium hobby. Its striking two-tone stripe — a bright white line above an intense black band — contrasts beautifully against green aquatic plants. Unlike the Neon Tetra, its coloration is subdued yet elegant and does not fade with age.
Water: 24–28°C, pH 5.5–7.5, soft to moderately hard. Tank: 60 L minimum; dense planting with open swimming space; dim lighting enhances colour. Feeding: Accepts quality micro-pellets, flake, frozen daphnia and brine shrimp nauplii. Behaviour: Peaceful schooling fish; keep in groups of 8+; active mid-water swimmer. Compatibility: Excellent with other small tetras, rasboras, corydoras, and dwarf cichlids.
