Carassius auratus
Also known as: Black Oranda, Black Fancy Goldfish, Oranda Goldfish
Origin: China/Japan
The Black Oranda's deep velvety coloration is the result of heavy melanin pigmentation, though it may develop orange patches with age — a natural and harmless color change. It shares the same care requirements as other orandas but is especially popular in Asian goldfish competitions. Strong filtration is vital to maintain the black pigmentation and wen condition.
Water: 10–22°C, pH 6.5–7.5, pristine water quality to preserve black pigmentation. Tank: minimum 150 L, darker substrate can enhance the fish's contrast. Feeding: high-protein sinking pellets, spirulina, vegetables — supports melanin production. Behaviour: peaceful; may become less black if stressed or water quality declines. Compatibility: keep with other fancy goldfish; avoid brightly lit tanks which can fade color.
