Betta splendens
Also known as: Black Orchid Betta, Black Betta, Melanoid Betta
Origin: Southeast Asia
Black orchid bettas are bred for an intense near-black body colouration with overlapping blue and sometimes red metallic iridescence, evoking the deep, complex hues of a black orchid flower. The colour is most vivid under spotlighting. Producing truly deep black specimens requires careful selective breeding over many generations.
Water: 26-30°C, pH 6.0-7.5, soft water preferred — tannin-stained water enhances the black colouration. Tank: minimum 20L; blackwater setup with driftwood and Indian almond leaves is ideal. Feeding: carnivore — betta pellets, frozen bloodworm, daphnia; twice daily. Behaviour: males aggressive to conspecifics — one per tank. Compatibility: blackwater community fish (e.g., small tetras, corydoras) are ideal tank mates.
