Macropodus opercularis
Also known as: Black Paradise Fish, Dark Paradise Gourami
Origin: Captive-bred
The Black Paradise Fish is a melanistic colour morph of Macropodus opercularis in which dark pigmentation dominates the body, producing a rich blue-black base with iridescent blue-green highlights on the scales and fins. The flowing fins remain and display beautifully when the fish is in full colour.
Temperament and care are as per the standard paradise fish. Males are territorial and should be kept singly unless the tank is very large and well-planted. The dark colouration makes this form particularly striking against a light sandy substrate and green plants.
Black Paradise Fish are produced by dedicated breeders and may be less common than standard or albino forms, adding collector appeal.
Water: 16–26°C, pH 6.0–8.0, GH 4–20; tolerates unheated rooms well throughout the year. Tank: minimum 80 L, planted with robust plants; floating cover and a secure lid are essential. Feeding: omnivore — quality pellets, frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp, small live invertebrates. Breeding: bubble-nester; male guards the nest aggressively; remove female after eggs are laid. Compatibility: semi-aggressive; one male per tank; compatible with robust, similarly sized cool-water species.
