Petrotilapia nigra
Also known as: Black Petrotilapia, Nigra Mbuna
Origin: Lake Malawi, Africa
The Black Petrotilapia is one of the largest mbuna species, with mature dominant males turning near-black with a slight iridescent sheen. It is highly territorial and can be aggressive toward conspecifics and other species. It requires a large, well-structured aquarium with robust rockwork to accommodate its size and aggression.
Water: 24-27°C, pH 7.8-9.0, hard alkaline water; high flow rate filtration. Tank: Minimum 300L; very solid and heavy rockwork that cannot be displaced. Feeding: Algae-based pellets, spirulina wafers, and blanched vegetables; avoid high-protein foods. Behaviour: Very aggressive males; only keep one male per tank unless the aquarium is exceptionally large. Compatibility: Large mbuna-only tanks; not suitable with peacocks, haps, or delicate species.
