Carassius auratus
Also known as: Black Ranchu, Black Fancy Goldfish, Ranchu Goldfish
Origin: Japan
Solid black ranchu are rare and highly prized, as pure black coloration is genetically unstable in goldfish and may shift to bronze or orange with age — a phenomenon many hobbyists find fascinating to observe. Keeping water quality high and avoiding excessive light can prolong the black pigmentation. This fish is a true collector's item.
Water: 10–22°C, pH 6.5–7.5, stable and pristine to preserve black coloration. Tank: minimum 150 L, subdued lighting helps maintain darker pigmentation. Feeding: high-protein sinking pellets, spirulina flakes, frozen foods for melanin support. Behaviour: peaceful bottom-dweller; slow and deliberate in its movements. Compatibility: other ranchu or lionhead goldfish; avoid fast or aggressive species.
