Oryzias nigrimas
Also known as: Black Ricefish, Black Medaka
Origin: Sulawesi, Indonesia
Oryzias nigrimas is an endemic species from Sulawesi, Indonesia, where it inhabits the ancient lake systems and surrounding streams. Its most distinctive feature is an intensely dark, nearly black body colouration that sets it apart from all other ricefish. Captive populations are maintained by specialist breeders and it remains scarce in the trade.
Water: 22–28 °C, pH 7.0–8.0, moderately hard; conditions typical for Sulawesi species. Tank: 20 L minimum; planted nano tank; dark body colour contrasts best with light substrates. Feeding: Micro pellets, small frozen foods, Daphnia, baby brine shrimp. Behaviour: Peaceful surface schooler; keep 8+ for natural schooling behaviour and reduced stress. Compatibility: Other medaka species, small nano fish, and adult dwarf shrimp.
