Pethia nigrofasciata
Also known as: Black Ruby Barb, Purple-Headed Barb
Origin: South Asia (Sri Lanka)
Pethia nigrofasciata is endemic to the rivers and streams of southwestern Sri Lanka. Outside of breeding condition, fish display a pale silver body with three dark vertical bars. When males come into breeding colour, the entire front of the body flushes deep purplish-red and the bars intensify to near-black — a transformation that rivals any freshwater fish. A well-planted aquarium with dark substrate enhances this colouration dramatically.
Water: 20–26°C, pH 6.0–7.0, soft to moderate (GH 4–12). Tank: 80 L minimum; densely planted with dark substrate to encourage vibrant colouration. Feeding: Omnivore; flake, micro-pellets, algae-based foods, frozen daphnia and brine shrimp. Behaviour: Peaceful schooler; keep in groups of 6+; males display to each other but rarely cause injury. Compatibility: Excellent with other peaceful species; rasboras, small tetras, corydoras, and peaceful loaches.
