Nothobranchius melanospilus
Also known as: Black-spot Nothobranch, Melanospilus Killifish
Origin: Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique
Nothobranchius melanospilus is one of the more widely distributed Nothobranchius, found across Kenya, Tanzania, and Mozambique in seasonal pools. The distinctive black spot at the caudal peduncle sets it apart, and males also display attractive red and blue patterning on the body and fins. It is one of the easier annual killifish to keep, tolerating slightly harder water than most relatives.
Water: 20–26 °C, pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderately hard. Tank: 30 L species tank; peat substrate for spawning; escape-proof lid essential. Feeding: Live and frozen Daphnia, Artemia, blood worm; micro-pellets accepted. Behaviour: Males territorial; keep one male per tank or as trio. Compatibility: Species tank recommended; can try with very robust, peaceful dither fish.
