Nothobranchius melanospilus
Also known as: Black-spot Nothobranchius, Black-spot Killifish
Origin: Tanzania, Mozambique
Nothobranchius melanospilus is an annual killifish from seasonal floodplain pools in Tanzania and Mozambique. It is easily recognised by the prominent black spot at the caudal peduncle, present in both sexes, which gives the species its common name. Males otherwise display vivid red-orange body colouration with blue scale edging, while females are plain brown.
This is a moderately sized Nothobranchius with standard husbandry requirements. A dedicated species tank with peat substrate, soft acidic water, and daily live or frozen foods produces the best results. Eggs require a dry diapause of 8–10 weeks. The species grows relatively quickly and can begin spawning within six weeks of hatching.
N. melanospilus is occasionally available through killifish societies and specialist suppliers. Its distinctive caudal spot makes it easy to identify and a useful conversation piece for keepers who enjoy discussing killifish diversity.
Water: 20–26 °C, pH 6.0–7.5, soft water (GH 2–10) preferred. Tank: 30 L species tank; peat or fine dark substrate for natural egg-burying. Feeding: Live Artemia, Daphnia, micro worms, and frozen bloodworm fed daily. Breeding: Collect eggs from peat; store dry 8–10 weeks before re-wetting. Compatibility: Species tank only; the distinctive caudal spot aids in quick identification.
