Synodontis nigromaculatus
Also known as: Black-spotted Synodontis, Blackspot Squeaker
Origin: Central and West Africa
Synodontis nigromaculatus is a broadly distributed species found across much of Central and West Africa, inhabiting large slow to moderately flowing rivers and lakes. Its bold, cleanly defined dark spots on a pale silvery background make it one of the more attractive and easily identified medium-to-large Synodontis.
In the aquarium it is tolerant of a wide range of soft to moderately hard water and is considered one of the less demanding large Synodontis, adapting readily to commercial sinking foods. It is active at night and rests in sheltered spots during the day, though in larger community tanks it often becomes bolder over time.
Longevity is one of this species' most notable traits; well-kept individuals routinely exceed 15 years in captivity.
Water: 22–27°C, pH 6.5–7.5, soft to moderately hard (GH 5–15, KH 2–10). Tank: 300 L minimum; rocky caves, large smooth stones; open sandy areas for foraging. Feeding: Sinking pellets, wafers, frozen bloodworm and prawn; unfussy and readily accepts prepared foods. Breeding: Cave spawner; not commonly bred in home aquariums. Compatibility: Peaceful with large community fish; may be mildly territorial over caves with conspecifics.
