Apistogramma sp. 'Schwarzkehl'
Also known as: Black-throat Apisto, Schwarzkehl Dwarf Cichlid, Black-chin Apistogramma
Origin: Colombia
Apistogramma sp. 'Schwarzkehl' (German for 'black-throat') is a riveting undescribed form from the Colombian Amazon whose dominant males develop a stark, high-contrast jet-black throat and chin patch that is unlike anything else seen in the genus. When combined with the typical Apistogramma body coloration of blue iridescent scales and vivid fin margins, the effect is striking and immediately attention-grabbing.
This form inhabits soft, acidic forest streams and requires typical blackwater management. It is moderately demanding — not at the extreme end of the spectrum — but definitely a species for keepers who have experience with soft-water cichlids.
As with all undescribed Apistogramma forms, documentation of captive behavior, coloration, and breeding is valuable for the wider research community.
Water: Soft, acidic — pH 5.0–6.5, temperature 25–28°C. Tank: 80 L with caves, leaf litter, and driftwood to allow full display. Feeding: Live/frozen invertebrates and quality pellets. Breeding: Cave spawner; female guards; relatively approachable for an undescribed form. Compatibility: Small peaceful dither fish; best with very non-competitive species.
