Melichthys niger
Origin: Circumtropical
The Black Triggerfish displays a sleek uniform deep-black colouration with striking blue-white lines at the base of its dorsal and anal fins. One of the more peaceful triggerfish, it is a schooling species in the wild and can be kept in groups in sufficiently large aquariums. Its relatively mild temperament makes it more compatible with other large fish.
Provide minimum 400 L with robust filtration. Feed meaty marine foods and marine pellets. Less destructive to reef invertebrates than most triggers but may eat ornamental shrimp. Can be kept in groups in very large systems (1000+ L). Needs robust tankmates — can be aggressive toward smaller fish.
