Blackcap Basslet

Gramma melacara is a deep-water Caribbean basslet with a bold black cap over a rich purple body. It prefers shaded caves and overhangs in the aquarium and can be kept in pairs if introduced simultaneously. Its striking colouration makes it one of the most sought-after basslets in the hobby.

Provide rock overhangs and caves for shelter — this species actively prefers shaded spots. Feed mysis, krill, and small meaty marine foods twice daily. Semi-aggressive toward conspecifics; keep in pairs introduced together or as a solitary individual. Relatively hardy once established. Prefers lower light areas of the tank.
