About

Percina maculata is a moderately sized darter widely distributed across the Mississippi Basin and Great Lakes tributaries. Unlike the smaller Etheostoma darters, it is a member of the logperch genus and shows the subterminal piggish snout typical of Percina. Its flanks bear a distinctive row of bold, rectangular to square black blotches running from head to tail, contrasting with an olive-tan background.

In the aquarium, Blackside Darters are slightly larger and more powerful than most Etheostoma, tolerating a somewhat broader range of conditions while still requiring cool, clean, well-oxygenated water. They appreciate a large, flat gravel and pebble substrate with some hiding spots and moderate current.

They feed on benthic invertebrates and small fish, and are among the more willing darters to accept frozen foods. Their subtle but attractive markings and interesting upside-down feeding behaviour — where they probe under pebbles for concealed prey — make them fascinating aquarium subjects.

Care Guide

Water: 12–22 °C, pH 6.5–8.0, moderate hardness; well-oxygenated with gentle to moderate current. Tank: 80 L minimum; flat gravel, cobbles, a few larger stones; open foraging areas. Feeding: Live/frozen bloodworms, Daphnia, aquatic invertebrates; more receptive to frozen foods than many darters. Breeding: Broadcasts eggs over gravel; male loosely guards area — multiple substrates recommended. Compatibility: Peaceful toward most species; males may spar — ensure adequate territory.
