Origin: South America (upper Amazon, Colombia)
Hyphessobrycon erythrostigma, the Bleeding Heart Tetra, originates from the upper Amazon in Colombia. Its most distinctive feature is the vivid blood-red, heart-shaped spot behind the pectoral fin. Males develop impressive elongated and pointed dorsal fins, making this one of the most visually striking Hyphessobrycon species. It is peaceful and relatively easy to keep in soft, warm, well-planted aquariums.
Water: 23–28°C, pH 6.0–7.0, soft and slightly acidic water. Tank: 80 L minimum; planted aquarium with open swimming space; subdued or warm lighting. Feeding: Quality flake, micro-pellets, frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp and daphnia. Behaviour: Peaceful schooling species; keep 6+; males display elongated dorsal fins to each other. Compatibility: Good with similar soft-water tetras, corydoras, small plecos and dwarf cichlids.
