Mystus bleekeri
Also known as: Bleeker's Mystus, Bleeker's Catfish
Origin: South Asia (India, Bangladesh, Myanmar)
Mystus bleekeri is a medium-sized bagrid distributed across India, Bangladesh, and Myanmar, inhabiting both large lowland rivers and smaller tributary streams. It bears fine dark horizontal streaks along its flanks on a silvery background, and its robust, wedge-shaped body reflects its active, mid-current lifestyle. Like other Mystus species it is a crepuscular omnivore that becomes most active around feeding time.
In the aquarium, Mystus bleekeri is adaptable and not particularly demanding in terms of water chemistry, tolerating a moderate range of pH and hardness. It benefits from regular water changes and a varied diet to maintain condition. Feeding in the evening produces the most natural activity, with the fish actively cruising the lower water column and scavenging the substrate for food.
This species is semi-aggressive and should not be kept with timid or very small fish. Medium barbs, robust tetras, larger loaches, and other bagrid catfish are suitable companions. In a well-maintained large community aquarium it is a reliable and characterful inhabitant that rewards consistent care with excellent health and longevity.
Water: 20–28°C, pH 6.5–7.8, soft to moderately hard (GH 2–18). Tank: 150 L minimum; sand or gravel; driftwood for shelter; moderate filtration. Feeding: Sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm, earthworms, prawn; feed at dusk for best response. Breeding: Seasonal spawner; rarely bred in captivity. Compatibility: Semi-aggressive; appropriate with medium robust community fish.
