Steatocranus casuarius
Origin: Central Africa (lower Congo River rapids, Democratic Republic of Congo)
The Blockhead or Humphead Cichlid is one of the most distinctive freshwater fish, with adult males developing an enormous fatty forehead hump. Native to the lower Congo River rapids, it has a reduced swim bladder and hops and crawls along the bottom rather than swimming freely. A fascinating, personable species that forms strong pair bonds and exhibits devoted biparental brood care. A unique addition to the Congo biotope aquarium.
Provide heavy current to replicate Congo rapids habitat. Use rocky substrate with caves and crevices for territory and breeding sites. Keep as a bonded pair. Feed varied omnivore diet: pellets, earthworms, frozen invertebrates. Avoid housing with timid or slow-moving species that may be bullied. Strong filtration essential.
