Stiphodon atropurpureus
Also known as: Blue-banded Stiphodon Goby, Purple Stiphodon, Blue-stripe Stiphodon
Origin: Papua New Guinea, eastern Indonesia
Stiphodon atropurpureus is among the most sought-after nano gobies in the specialist freshwater hobby. Mature males are breathtaking: a warm amber-orange base is overlaid with two to three electric-blue lateral stripes that flash under bright lighting. Females are drab brown by comparison but share the same compact, dorsoventrally flattened body ideal for clinging to current-swept rock faces. Found in clear, fast-flowing lowland to upland streams of Papua New Guinea and eastern Indonesia, this amphidromous species requires marine larval development, making captive breeding impractical. In the aquarium the focus should be on replicating its natural habitat: strong flow, smooth stones rich in periphyton, and pristine water quality. Males defend territories but rarely harm each other or other species.
Water: 22–26 °C, pH 7.0–7.8, GH 5–15, KH 3–10; very high oxygenation required; sensitive to nitrate above 20 ppm. Tank: 60 L minimum; round pebbles and flat slate pieces; directional flow from powerhead or Tunze Nanostream. Feeding: Biofilm grazer; offer spirulina wafers, Repashy gel foods, and blanched zucchini; will accept small frozen foods occasionally. Breeding: Amphidromous; eggs hatch and larvae drift to sea — not achievable in standard home aquaria. Compatibility: Ideal with Rhinogobius, Sicyopus, or small peaceful loaches; avoid nippy or large species.
