Neochromis omnicaeruleus
Also known as: Blue-black Victorian Mbuna, Omnicaeruleus Victorian
Origin: Lake Victoria, Africa
The Blue-black Victorian Mbuna occupies the rocky shorelines of Lake Victoria in a niche ecologically convergent with the mbuna of Lake Malawi. Males in full breeding colour are a striking deep blue-black, while females show a brown-barred pattern. It is a maternal mouthbrooder and an endangered species in need of captive conservation effort.
Water: 23-26°C, pH 7.5-8.5, moderately hard alkaline water; weekly water changes essential. Tank: Minimum 150L; rock-heavy setup reminiscent of mbuna aquaria with multiple caves. Feeding: Herbivore-leaning omnivore — spirulina pellets, algae wafers, and occasional frozen invertebrates. Behaviour: Territorial males; shares ecological role and behaviour with mbuna; treat as mbuna in husbandry. Compatibility: Victorian cichlid biotope; can mix with other medium-sized Victorian cichlids in larger tanks.
