Blood Parrot hybrid (Amphilophus × Vieja)
Also known as: Blue Blood Parrot, Blue Parrot Cichlid
Origin: Captive bred (hybrid)
The Blue Blood Parrot is produced through selective breeding for reduced warm pigmentation, allowing the structural blue-grey iridescence naturally present in the scales to dominate the body colour. The result is a fish with a soft, cool-toned blue to steel-grey appearance that stands out dramatically in aquariums dominated by warm-coloured fish.
Maintaining the blue colouration requires a diet that does not over-supplement carotenoids, as these will shift the body colour toward orange-red over time. Standard pellet-based diets without heavy astaxanthin supplementation are appropriate for keepers wishing to preserve the blue colouration.
Care, temperament, and compatibility of the Blue Blood Parrot are identical to the standard form. It represents an aesthetic variation rather than a distinct variety in terms of husbandry.
Water: 25–30°C, pH 6.5–7.5; stable conditions; avoid significant temperature fluctuations. Tank: 200L minimum; community capable; provide hiding places and territory markers. Feeding: Omnivore; avoid heavy carotenoid-rich foods to preserve blue tones; quality cichlid pellets are ideal. Breeding: Males typically infertile; females may spawn; strong parental instincts displayed. Compatibility: Semi-aggressive; suitable with medium-large robust tankmates.
