Symphysodon aequifasciatus var.
Also known as: Blue Diamond Discus, Diamond Blue Discus
Origin: Captive bred (originally Southeast Asian hatcheries)
The Blue Diamond Discus represents the pinnacle of solid-colour breeding in the discus hobby. Through selective breeding over many generations, this strain has had virtually all vertical bars and horizontal striping bred out, leaving a smooth, uninterrupted metallic-blue canvas broken only by the characteristic red eye.
Achieving and maintaining the deep diamond-blue coloration requires soft, acidic, warm water and a diet rich in colour-enhancing compounds. Any stress — poor water quality, incompatible tank mates, or nutritional deficiency — manifests quickly as fading or the reappearance of stress bars.
Blue Diamond is a competition-grade strain frequently displayed at discus shows. Keeping a group of five or more in a minimalist aquarium with black background maximises the visual impact of this extraordinary fish.
Water: 28-31°C, pH 5.5-6.8, very soft (1-6 dGH), KH 0-3; near-zero nitrates for competition quality. Tank: Minimum 250 L, black background, dark substrate, minimal decor to spotlight the solid blue body. Feeding: Premium discus pellets with colour enhancers, frozen bloodworm, white mosquito larvae, beefheart. Breeding: Selective pairing recommended to maintain solid blue genetics; spawns on vertical slate or cone. Compatibility: Best in a species-only discus tank or with non-competitive, very peaceful companions.
