Symphysodon aequifasciatus
Also known as: Blue Discus, Wild Blue Discus, Amazon Discus
Origin: South America
The wild-type Blue Discus retains the natural colouration of Symphysodon aequifasciatus as found in Amazonian floodplains — a warm brown disc with vertical bands and a wash of blue iridescence on the face and flanks. Less vivid than captive morphs but more challenging and rewarding for experienced keepers.
Water: 28-31°C, pH 5.5-6.8, very soft water essential (0-6 dGH). Tank: Minimum 300L, tall tank, very frequent large water changes (50%+ weekly). Feeding: Beef heart mix, frozen bloodworm, quality discus granules; feed 3-5 times daily. Behaviour: Peaceful schooling fish that becomes very stressed when kept alone. Compatibility: Best kept in groups of 6+ with small peaceful tetras and corydoras.
