Cambarellus texanus
Also known as: Blue Dwarf Crayfish, Texas Dwarf Crayfish
Origin: Texas, USA
Cambarellus texanus is a small, hardy dwarf crayfish from Texas rivers and springs with a subtle blue-grey colouration. Like other Cambarellus species, it is far more docile and community-compatible than large crayfish and is a good choice for hobbyists who want a crayfish in a moderately stocked tank. It tops out at around 4cm and is easy to breed in captivity.
Water: 18–25°C, pH 7.0–8.0; clean, moderately hard water; avoid very acidic conditions. Tank: Minimum 40L with hiding places, caves, and fine substrate; planted tanks work well. Feeding: Sinking pellets, blanched greens, algae wafers, and occasional meaty protein. Behaviour: Relatively peaceful for a crayfish; less destructive than large species; active and diurnal. Compatibility: Compatible with medium-sized peaceful fish; avoid delicate dwarf shrimp.
