About

Inpaichthys kerri, the Blue Emperor Tetra, is a small and strikingly beautiful tetra from the upper Aripuanã River system in the Mato Grosso state of Brazil. Despite sharing a common name with the better-known Emperor Tetra (Nematobrycon palmeri), it belongs to a different genus and has a distinctly different appearance — one of the most vibrant blue lateral stripes of any tetra species.

Males are particularly beautiful: a deep blue-purple body with a bold, iridescent electric blue stripe running from the snout to the caudal peduncle, vivid blue-purple in the dorsal fin, and dark patterning in the tail. Females are less dramatically coloured but display attractive brownish-orange tones with a less vivid lateral stripe. The sexual dimorphism is pronounced and makes sexing simple once fish mature.

Blue Emperor Tetras grow to approximately 3–3.5 cm, making them suitable for nano and small planted aquariums as well as standard community tanks. They are entirely peaceful and pose no threat to any tank mate, including small shrimp and fry.

This species prefers soft, slightly acidic water reflecting its blackwater origin in the Brazilian Amazon, but captive-bred specimens show reasonable adaptability to moderate water hardness. The most vivid blue colouration in males is achieved under soft, slightly acidic conditions with good plant cover and a dark substrate that makes the blue stripe 'pop'.

Care Guide

Tank Setup: A 40-litre nano or larger planted tank for a group of eight. Dense planting with dark substrate, Indian almond leaves or peat filtration, and gentle flow. Subdued lighting (or floating plants to diffuse light) intensifies the blue colouration in males. A tightly fitting lid — small tetras can jump.

Water Parameters: Temperature 23–28°C; pH 5.5–7.0; GH 2–10 °dH; KH 1–5 °dH. Soft, slightly acidic water for best colour expression. Captive-bred specimens tolerate moderate hardness.

Feeding: Omnivore. Small mouths require small foods: micro pellets, crushed flake, baby brine shrimp, micro worms, Daphnia. Feed twice daily in small amounts.

Tank Mates: All peaceful community species of appropriate size: other small tetras, small rasboras, pygmy corydoras, Otocinclus, small Apistogramma, and peaceful dwarf shrimp. Avoid any fish large enough to eat them or aggressive fin-nippers.

Behaviour: Peaceful schooling fish. Groups of 8+ school loosely and the males display vivid colour in competition with each other. Very gentle fish that do not harass any other species. Ideal for delicate nano communities.

Health: Hardy for a small tetra. Sensitive to poor water quality — maintain pristine conditions with weekly 20–25% water changes. Avoid temperature fluctuations and sudden chemistry changes.
