Cryptoheros spilurus
Also known as: Blue-eye Cichlid
Origin: Central America
Cryptoheros spilurus is a small cichlid from the Atlantic drainages of Guatemala and Belize, where it inhabits sluggish and weedy waters. It is named for the bright cobalt-blue eye that contrasts beautifully with its otherwise subdued body colouration of grey, beige, and faint barring. In breeding condition, females display much more intense colouration than males — an unusual trait among cichlids.
Water: 22–28°C, pH 7.0–8.0, moderate hardness (GH 6–18). Tank: 120L minimum; provide caves, flowerpots, or coconut shells for spawning and shelter. Feeding: Omnivore; cichlid pellets, flakes, frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp, and spirulina. Behaviour: Semi-aggressive; breeding pairs become strongly territorial and will defend fry vigorously. Compatibility: Can be kept with other small robust cichlids or large dither fish in spacious tanks.
