Apistogramma eunotus
Also known as: Blue-face Apisto, Eunotus Dwarf Cichlid, Blue-cheeked Apistogramma
Origin: Peru
Apistogramma eunotus is a well-established species in the Peruvian Amazon trade and is considered one of the more accessible of the softwater-demanding apistos. Males develop an unmistakable blue facial mask covering the cheek and lower jaw, combined with elongated dorsal fin extensions that become truly impressive in mature specimens.
This species inhabits slow-moving, tannic streams and is tolerant of a moderate range of water parameters compared to some of its rarer congeners. It is an active and personable fish that quickly learns to recognize its keeper and will often approach the front glass at feeding time.
A. eunotus breeds readily once a compatible pair is established and can serve as an excellent introduction to Apistogramma breeding for intermediate hobbyists.
Water: Soft to moderately soft — pH 5.0–7.0, temperature 24–28°C. Tank: 60 L with sand substrate, caves, plants, and leaf litter. Feeding: Micro-pellets, frozen Artemia, Daphnia, and bloodworm eagerly accepted. Breeding: Cave spawner; female exclusively guards fry; relatively easy to breed. Compatibility: Good with small South American tetras, pencilfish, and non-territorial bottom dwellers.
