Thorichthys aureus
Also known as: Blue Flash Cichlid, Golden Firemouth
Origin: Central America
Thorichthys aureus inhabits clear, shallow rivers draining into the Gulf of Mexico in Belize and Guatemala. It closely resembles the Firemouth but is distinguished by its more intense blue iridescence that covers much of the body and face. Like other members of the genus, it is a substrate-sifter, spending much of its time picking through sand for invertebrates and organic matter.
Water: 22–28°C, pH 7.0–8.0, moderately hard (GH 8–18). Tank: Minimum 200L; sandy substrate essential for sifting; include caves and flat rocks for spawning. Feeding: Omnivore; high-quality cichlid pellets, frozen foods, and occasional vegetable matter. Behaviour: Semi-aggressive; males intensify colour and display during spawning; gill-flares precede most disputes. Compatibility: Best with similarly sized cichlids; pairs can be kept in a species tank of 200L.
