Poecilia reticulata var.
Also known as: Blue Grass Guppy, Grass Guppy
Origin: Captive bred (originally Trinidad)
The Blue Grass Guppy is one of the original show guppy patterns, defined by fine, uniform spotting across the caudal fin that resembles blades of grass or a scatter of blue glitter. The body is typically steel-blue or blue-grey with matching iridescent scales.
Grass-pattern guppies are judged on the uniformity and density of the spots across the tail, with show-quality fish displaying tight, even patterns extending to the fin edges. This makes them both a beautiful display fish and an interesting project for breeders aiming for show-bench quality.
The Blue Grass is a hardy and reliable strain, tolerant of a range of water conditions but colouring up best in hard, alkaline water with good nutrition.
Water: 22–28 °C, pH 7.0–8.0, GH 8–20; hard water supports spot density and clarity. Tank: 60 L minimum; moderate planting; good lighting shows off the dot pattern best. Feeding: Quality flake, spirulina, frozen Daphnia and Artemia; 2–3 small meals daily. Breeding: Livebearer; grass pattern is heritable; select for tight, even spotting in breeding stock. Compatibility: Peaceful community fish; avoid fin-nipping species.
