Xiphophorus maculatus var.
Also known as: Blue Mirror Platy, Blue Platy
Origin: Captive bred (originally Mexico/Guatemala)
The Blue Mirror Platy is a selectively developed Xiphophorus maculatus variety that expresses a metallic powder-blue to steel-blue colouration with a particularly bright iridescent sheen on the flanks that resembles a polished mirror surface under direct lighting.
Blue platy varieties are somewhat less common than red or orange forms, making the Blue Mirror a welcome alternative for aquarists seeking a cooler colour palette. The metallic sheen is best expressed in well-lit aquariums against dark substrate or green planting.
As with all platies, the Blue Mirror is highly adaptable, easy to feed, and prolific, making it suitable for beginners and experienced keepers alike.
Water: 20–26 °C, pH 7.0–8.0, moderate to hard water; stable parameters preferred. Tank: 60 L minimum; bright lighting enhances the mirror sheen; dark substrate recommended. Feeding: Accepts all foods; vegetable-based flake beneficial alongside protein sources. Breeding: Prolific; fry easily raised; blue colouration develops fully by 6–8 weeks. Compatibility: Excellent community fish; peaceful with all non-aggressive species.
