Poecilia reticulata var.
Also known as: Blue Moscow Guppy, Moscow Blue Guppy
Origin: Captive bred (Eastern Europe lineage)
The Blue Moscow Guppy is one of the most celebrated show strains, originating from selective breeding programs in Eastern Europe. Males develop a uniformly deep metallic blue body with a large, flowing delta tail that shimmers brilliantly under aquarium lighting.
Moscow strains are generally hardy and adaptable but reward the keeper who maintains stable, hard alkaline water with superior colour expression. Males reach full colour by three to four months of age.
Best displayed in species or strain tanks to maintain line purity, though they can be kept in peaceful community aquariums with small, non-nippy companions.
Water: 22–28 °C, pH 7.0–8.0, hard water (GH 10–20) brings out best blue colouration. Tank: 60 L minimum; good filtration but gentle flow; planted with stem plants and floating cover. Feeding: Quality flake and micro-pellet base; supplement with frozen Daphnia, Artemia, and spirulina flake. Breeding: Highly prolific; maintain 1 male to 2–3 females; separate fry for strain maintenance. Compatibility: Peaceful; keep with small tetras, rasboras, or corydoras; avoid fin-nippers.
