Stiphodon atropurpureus
Also known as: Blue Neon Stiphodon Goby, Blue Stiphodon, Purple Stiphodon
Origin: Sulawesi, Indonesia
Stiphodon atropurpureus males develop stunning electric-blue or purple iridescent colouration as they mature. They are algae grazers that use their modified mouths to scrape biofilm and algae from rocks and surfaces. They require well-oxygenated, slightly cooler water and are best kept in current-rich setups with smooth rocks.
Water: 22–26 °C, pH 6.5–7.5, moderate to hard (GH 8–18); well-oxygenated with moderate flow. Tank: 30 L minimum; smooth river rocks, mature biofilm, gentle to moderate flow. Feeding: Algae wafers, blanched vegetables, biofilm; supplement with frozen Cyclops and brine shrimp. Behaviour: Males territorial with each other; best kept as 1 male per tank or with generous space. Compatibility: Peaceful with mid and upper water fish; do not house with fin nippers.
