Astronotus ocellatus
Also known as: Blue Oscar, Blue Tiger Oscar
Origin: South America (captive line)
The Blue Oscar is developed through selective breeding that emphasises the structural blue-grey iridescence present in Oscar scales while suppressing warm carotenoid-based pigmentation. The result is a fish that appears predominantly blue-grey with some residual darker markings, creating a cool, metallic appearance unlike any other Oscar variant.
Maintaining the blue colouration requires dietary management: avoiding heavy astaxanthin and carotenoid supplementation prevents the colour from shifting toward orange. Standard cichlid pellets without colour-enhancing additives are appropriate for keepers who wish to preserve the blue tones.
The Blue Oscar retains the full suite of Oscar personality traits — intelligence, interactivity, and assertiveness — and requires the same husbandry as all other Oscar forms.
Water: 23–28°C, pH 6.0–7.5; avoid over-supplementation of carotenoid-rich foods to maintain blue tones. Tank: 400L minimum; standard Oscar setup with powerful filtration and large weekly water changes. Feeding: Carnivore; standard pellets without colour enhancers to preserve blue colouration. Breeding: Open substrate spawner; same as other Oscar forms. Compatibility: Aggressive; house with comparably sized robust cichlids.
