About

The Blue Panda Guppy is a captive-developed strain of Poecilia reticulata, the Common Guppy, one of the most widely kept freshwater fish in the world. The 'panda' pattern refers to the high-contrast combination of pale cream or white base colour with bold black patches, reminiscent of a giant panda's markings. In the Blue Panda strain, the body of the male displays an additional blue iridescence that complements the panda colouration beautifully.

Male guppies are among the most colourful of all freshwater fish, and each individual male displays a slightly unique pattern due to the polygenic nature of guppy colouration genetics. The elaborate, flowing caudal fin of fancy guppy strains — in this case the panda pattern — is a secondary sexual characteristic that females select for during breeding.

Guppies are livebearers, giving birth to fully formed, free-swimming fry after a 26–31 day gestation period. A single female can produce 10–80 fry per brood, and can store sperm for multiple consecutive broods from a single mating. In a mixed-sex community aquarium, populations can quickly grow unless fry are removed or natural predation keeps numbers in check.

Guppies are extremely adaptable and hardy, tolerating a wide range of water conditions and temperatures. They are also effective mosquito larvae consumers, which contributed to their introduction worldwide in the early 20th century for malaria control.

Care Guide

Tank Setup: A 40-litre minimum for a trio (one male, two females). Provide moderate planting, gentle filtration, and a tight lid (guppies can jump). Floating plants are appreciated by females providing refuge from persistent male attention. Weekly partial water changes are essential.

Water Parameters: Temperature 22–28°C; pH 6.5–8.5; GH 8–25 °dH; KH 5–15 °dH. Prefers slightly hard, alkaline water — most Belgian tap water is ideal. Tolerates a very broad range of conditions.

Feeding: Omnivore. Feed quality guppy flake or micro pellets, frozen Daphnia, brine shrimp, and micro worms. Supplement with finely crushed spirulina flake for colour enhancement. Feed twice daily in small amounts.

Tank Mates: Peaceful with most community fish. Ideal with other livebearers, small tetras, rasboras, corydoras, small plecos, and peaceful gouramis. Avoid Tiger Barbs and other fin-nippers that will shred the guppy's elaborate tail. Keep away from Bettas.

Behaviour: Males court females constantly. Maintain a ratio of at least two females per male to prevent individual females from being harassed excessively. Males display to each other and females with spread fins and colour intensification.

Health: Hardy but susceptible to 'guppy disease' (columnaris/velvet) in poor water conditions or temperature fluctuations. Fin rot is common in fin-nipping tank setups. Maintain good water quality and appropriate tank mates.
