Hemiancistrus sp. L128
Also known as: Blue Phantom Pleco, L128, Blue Phantom
Origin: Rio Orinoco, Venezuela
Hemiancistrus sp. L128, the Blue Phantom Pleco, is one of the most visually captivating loricariids in the hobby. Its deep steel-blue to teal body is densely covered with fine white spots that create a shimmering, celestial appearance under bright aquarium lighting. It originates from the warm, fast-flowing, rocky sections of the upper Orinoco in Venezuela, where strong current and excellent oxygenation are hallmarks of the habitat.
In the aquarium the Blue Phantom Pleco requires strong water movement, high oxygenation, and warm temperatures of 26–30°C. A tank of at least 180 L with smooth rocks, driftwood, and caves for shelter replicates the natural biotope effectively. Its omnivorous diet should include sinking algae wafers, Repashy, and meaty supplements such as bloodworms or brine shrimp to maintain its vivid colouration.
The Blue Phantom Pleco is relatively peaceful toward other species and makes an excellent community fish for large South American setups. Males may show mild territorial behaviour toward each other near caves, but overall it is one of the less aggressive members of the medium-large pleco group.
Water: 26–30°C, pH 5.5–7.0, soft to moderately hard; strong flow and high oxygenation critical. Tank: Minimum 180 L; smooth rocks, slate ledges, caves, driftwood to provide cover and grazing surfaces. Feeding: Omnivore; algae wafers, Repashy, blanched vegetables, bloodworms, and brine shrimp. Breeding: Cave spawner; achievable in well-maintained setups; male guards eggs; stable warm conditions required. Compatibility: Peaceful with community fish; mild territorial behaviour toward males of same species near caves.
