Hemiancistrus sp. L128
Also known as: Blue Phantom Pleco, L128
Origin: South America (Venezuela, Orinoco River system)
Hemiancistrus sp. L128, the Blue Phantom Pleco, is one of the most sought-after L-number Plecos in the aquarium hobby. Native to the fast-flowing, highly oxygenated rivers of Venezuela — particularly the Orinoco system — this species stands out for its striking blue-grey to slate-blue base colouration densely covered in white or cream spots of various sizes, creating a beautiful 'blue phantom' appearance.
The L-number system (L128 here) was established by aquarium hobbyists to catalogue the many undescribed Loricariid catfish species that entered the hobby from South America faster than science could formally describe them. Many of these 'L-numbers' remain scientifically undescribed to this day.
Blue Phantom Plecos are algae grazers and wood raspers — they require driftwood in their aquarium, which they rasp and consume for dietary fibre. Without wood, they often decline in health. They are also detritivores, consuming decaying organic matter from the substrate and surfaces.
This species comes from fast-flowing, highly oxygenated rivers where water is crystal clear and rich in dissolved oxygen. Replicating these conditions in captivity — strong filtration, high oxygenation, clean water — is essential. It is less tolerant of stagnant, poorly-oxygenated conditions than some other Pleco species.
Tank Setup: Minimum 150 litres for a single specimen. Strong filtration (canister filter or high-capacity hang-on) with significant water movement. Add multiple pieces of driftwood (mopani, bogwood) which the fish will graze on constantly. Smooth rocks and PVC caves provide hiding spots. Dark substrate and dim lighting suit this nocturnal species.
Water Parameters: Temperature 22–26°C; pH 6.5–7.5; GH 5–15 °dH; KH 3–8 °dH. High oxygenation is critical — use a powerhead or spray bar to maximise dissolved oxygen. Avoid high temperatures above 27°C.
Feeding: Omnivore with herbivore-detritivore tendencies. Provide driftwood (essential), blanched vegetables (zucchini, cucumber, courgette), algae wafers, sinking pellets, and occasional frozen Daphnia or bloodworm for protein. Feed in the evening when active.
Tank Mates: Peaceful toward most fish. Keep with similarly sized, robust community species. Avoid very aggressive fish or species that will compete for hiding spots. Can be kept with other Plecos if the tank is large enough (150+ litres per specimen).
Behaviour: Primarily nocturnal — hides during the day, becomes active at dusk. Grazes constantly on wood and glass surfaces. Males may be territorial toward other male Plecos — provide separate cave territories if multiple are kept.
Health: Sensitive to poor water quality and low oxygen. Main health risks are bacterial infections from stagnant conditions or oxygen depletion. Never allow the filter to block — maintain weekly maintenance. Regular 25% water changes essential.
