Symphysodon aequifasciatus var.
Also known as: Blue Scorpion Discus, Scorpion Discus
Origin: Captive bred (originally Southeast Asian hatcheries)
The Blue Scorpion Discus is a contemporary strain developed through careful selective breeding to produce a distinctive dark-line pattern superimposed over a rich blue background. The dark markings radiate outward from the central body area like the segmented tail of a scorpion, giving each specimen an almost abstract, graphic quality.
This strain requires experienced care — warm, very soft, acidic water and a high-protein diet with colour-enhancing supplements. The interplay of dark markings over blue requires optimal water quality; stress causes the dark pattern to blur as stress bars appear and compete with the scorpion markings.
Blue Scorpion is a conversation-starter fish that draws attention at discus meets and in display aquariums. Its unusual patterning is complemented by a calm, peaceful temperament typical of domestic discus strains.
Water: 28-31°C, pH 5.5-7.0, very soft (1-6 dGH), KH 0-4; pristine conditions to maintain pattern definition. Tank: Minimum 250 L, dark substrate, moderate lighting, minimal competing visual elements in decor. Feeding: Colour-enhancing discus pellets, frozen bloodworm, beefheart, mysis shrimp; varied high-protein diet. Breeding: Open spawner; scorpion patterning partially heritable; selective breeding required to maintain pattern. Compatibility: Peaceful with other discus, cardinal tetras, and gentle Amazon community fish.
