Symphysodon aequifasciatus var.
Also known as: Blue Snakeskin Discus, Snakeskin Discus
Origin: Captive bred (originally Southeast Asian hatcheries)
The Blue Snakeskin Discus combines the deep blue pigmentation of the Cobalt and Royal Blue lines with the intricate reticulated overlay of snakeskin genetics. The result is a visually layered fish where dense blue-toned scales are outlined by a finer network of darker reticulation, creating a texture reminiscent of fine reptile skin.
The snakeskin pattern is best expressed in fish maintained in optimal water conditions — warm, soft, acidic — with a high-protein diet supplemented with colour-enhancing compounds. Stress or nutritional deficiency causes the reticulation to flatten and lose contrast against the blue background.
Blue Snakeskin pairs beautifully with Yellow Golden Snakeskin variants to create a visually cohesive but colour-contrasting display where the shared pattern language unites the fish despite their differing hues.
Water: 28-31°C, pH 5.5-7.0, soft (1-8 dGH), KH 0-4; regular partial water changes essential. Tank: Minimum 250 L tall, moderate lighting to show snakeskin reticulation, driftwood and broad-leaf plants. Feeding: Colour-enhancing discus pellets, frozen bloodworm, beefheart, brine shrimp; 2-3 feedings daily. Breeding: Open spawner; snakeskin is heritable; pair snakeskin to snakeskin to maintain pattern in offspring. Compatibility: Peaceful with other discus, cardinal tetras, rummynose tetras, and small peaceful catfish.
