Mespilia globulus
Origin: Indo-Pacific
The Blue Tuxedo Urchin (Mespilia globulus) is one of the most attractive reef invertebrates — deep blue with distinctive white-tipped spines and bold patterning. Smaller and less destructive than other urchins, it grazes film algae and coralline algae without dislodging corals. Completely reef-safe.
Reef-safe with corals. Provide rockwork with plenty of algae to graze. Does not need to be fed if the tank has algae growth. Stable pH important for spine health. Very sensitive to copper — NEVER use copper treatments in a tank housing urchins. Acclimate carefully with drip method.
