Neocaridina davidi var.
Also known as: Blue Velvet Neocaridina, Blue Velvet Shrimp
Origin: Captive bred (originally East Asia)
The Blue Velvet Neocaridina is a high-grade selectively bred Neocaridina davidi morph displaying a rich, fully opaque cobalt-blue colouration extending uniformly across the entire body including legs and antennae. The 'velvet' descriptor reflects the dense, matte-like quality of the blue pigmentation in top specimens, which lacks the translucency of lower-grade blue Neocaridina.
This morph combines spectacular, head-turning blue colouration with the same complete beginner-friendliness of all Neocaridina. It tolerates most dechlorinated tap water conditions and breeds prolifically in stable parameters without any specialised equipment.
The Blue Velvet Neocaridina is one of the most popular and consistently available blue freshwater shrimp, representing exceptional value for the level of visual impact it delivers in a planted aquarium.
Water: 18–26°C, pH 6.5–7.5, GH 6–15, KH 2–8; most dechlorinated tap water suitable. Tank: minimum 20 L; dark substrate essential for maximum colour impact; dense plant coverage. Feeding: algae wafers, blanched vegetables, shrimp pellets, spirulina-based foods. Breeding: easy; females carry 20–30 eggs; blue colour density variable; select best for breeding. Compatibility: peaceful; excellent with nano fish; do not mix with other blue Neocaridina to preserve colour.
