Blue Zebra Mbuna

Metriaclima zebra is one of the most recognised and widely kept mbuna cichlids. Found throughout Lake Malawi in multiple colour morphs, the standard form displays powder-blue colouration with hints of vertical barring. It is one of the original mbuna species that sparked global interest in Malawi cichlids and remains extremely popular decades later.

Water: 24-28°C, pH 7.5-8.5, hard alkaline; weekly partial water changes. Tank: 200L minimum with abundant rock structure filling most of the tank. Feeding: Algae-based staple foods; spirulina flakes, Rift Lake pellets; avoid protein-heavy foods. Behaviour: Territorial and moderately aggressive; typical mbuna behaviour. Compatibility: Standard Malawi mbuna community; avoid housing with multiple zebra variants.
