Melanotaenia boesemani
Also known as: Boeseman's Rainbowfish, Boesemani Rainbowfish
Origin: Indonesia (West Papua, Ajamaru Lakes)
Endemic to the Ajamaru Lakes of West Papua, Melanotaenia boesemani inhabits clear, hard, alkaline water and thrives in well-maintained community aquariums. Males develop their full bicolour splendour over 12–18 months, making them a rewarding long-term project. Keep in groups of six or more to encourage natural display behaviour and reduce individual stress.
Water: 25–30°C, pH 7.0–8.0, hard water (GH 10–20, KH 5–12). Tank: 150 L+, open swimming space, robust plants and subdued lighting. Feeding: Omnivore; quality flakes, micro-pellets, frozen bloodworm and brine shrimp. Behaviour: Active, peaceful schooling fish; keep 6+ with a good male-to-female ratio. Compatibility: Excellent community fish; avoid very small or fin-nipping species.
