Potamotrygon boesemani
Also known as: Boeseman's Stingray, Suriname Reticulate Ray
Origin: Suriname River, Suriname
Potamotrygon boesemani is native to the Suriname River drainage of Suriname, South America, where it inhabits sandy substrates in warm, blackwater-influenced rivers. Its pale yellowish disc is covered in dense brown reticular markings and scattered small ocelli, creating a complex interlocking pattern that varies between individuals. It is one of the less frequently imported Potamotrygon species, and captive husbandry data remain limited compared to commonly traded species such as P. motoro. Requirements are broadly similar to other potamotrygonids: pristine, warm, soft, acidic water with zero ammonia and nitrite tolerance. Its rarity in the trade means captive-bred specimens are especially valued and owners are encouraged to participate in cooperative breeding programmes.
Water: 24–28°C, pH 5.5–6.8, soft (1–6 dGH); nitrate below 15 ppm; very sensitive to parameter swings. Tank: Minimum 450L, fine sand, tight lid, subdued lighting; oversized biological filtration recommended. Feeding: Carnivore; earthworms, frozen prawn, mussel, bloodworm; acclimatisation to frozen foods may take time. Breeding: Viviparous; limited captive breeding records; pair with a known male to attempt reproduction. Compatibility: Specialist species best kept alone or with very large, sedate tankmates; stress must be minimised.
